A Christmas Carol

Be whisked away with the best loved and most famous of Charles Dickens works. Who can ever forget those immortal words “Bah, Humbug!”? A new local Drama Group, Friends at Barton, will be presenting this classic tale of the mean old miser Scrooge. Throw in a few Ghosts and you have the perfect evening’s entertainment in a venue that could not be more in keeping…..The Joseph Wright Hall, built in Victorian times. Paul Tate, originally from Barton has adapted the story for the stage and cannot wait to get you all in the Christmas SPIRIT! Every pun intended!

Christmas Past

Immerse yourself in a traditional Victorian Christmas with things for the kids to do and make, and a chance for the grownups to enjoy traditional Christmas fare in the Old School Canteen coffee shop.

If you have booked a table in the indoor market  or table top sale you can set up from 11am – tables will be in the Joseph Wright Hall adjacent to the museum.  Pop in to museum reception first to register.

The sales will run from 1pm – 5pm.

Tea with Oscar Wilde

Ladies and Gentlemen … You are cordially invited to the 1890’s wittiest “Chit-Chat” show where a gay time is guaranteed! You’ll be ‘Wilde’ about who he has on his chaise.
The popular modern chat show reimagined for the Victorian age, hosted by the acclaimed wit of the era, Oscar Wilde. Following the now familiar format, guests include a selection of some of the ‘celebrities’ of the day. Packed with gossip, song and humour – and a few surprises – this light-hearted performance invites the audience to experience the 1890s wittiest “chit chat” show.

Cuthbert Brodrick ~ Yorkshire Architect – Barton Civic Society

John Scotney outlines the life and work of one of Hull’s most famous architects who designed Leeds Town Hall, The Grand Hotel in Scarborough and the former Town Hall in Hull. This talk will be in the Joseph Wright Hall designed by Joseph Wright, a pupil of Brodrick.

Penny Dreadful! Or Mrs. Lovett’s Revenge!

Chills and chuckles in abundance with this original one-woman show featuring Sweeney Todd’s partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett! Be appalled by a plethora of other grotesque characters from the cheap and grisly pages of the Victorian era’s penny dreadful papers, in a theatrical comedy suitable for children and the young at heart. Tom Mulholland will be delivering his hand-on Victorian Science lecture with lots of amazing demonstrations and oodles of audience participation. Discover the genius of the North – its inventors, engineers and scientists who have embraced the new technologies and contributed to the industrial revolution that is changing our lives. The show includes practical demonstrations of treating aches and pains with electric shock, using air pressure to power railways, steam power to drive engines, and fanciful mechanisms to make toys work!
